Higher education successes

NGCF school graduates continue to show resilience in the face of multiple challenges concerning higher education. Both the pandemic and ongoing strikes by university teachers have made the admissions process more than usually chaotic. However, we are delighted to announce that three NGCF scholars from the girls’ school started university courses this year (in Biochemistry, Theatre Arts and Law), whilst four from the other school have also gained admission to university or polytechnic, on courses including Music, Nutrition and Dietetics, and Chemical Engineering. A fifth has a vocation to the priesthood and has gained admission to a seminary. We are very pleased, proud and excited for all these scholars and wish them every success in their studiesNGCF school graduates continue to show resilience in the face of multiple challenges concerning higher education. Gospel Choir sings again  for NGCF

By mid-2022, the country was comfortable with holding public events. Graciously and very kindly, the Reading Community Gospel Choir agreed to perform again for us and a date was set for Saturday 15th October 2022. It seemed as if an eternity had passed since our last concert had taken place. Many things had changed in the intervening period but perhaps the most important was that our normal venue, in the church of Our Lady of Peace and Blessed Dominic Barberi, was no longer available to us and we had to hire a more basic church hall. Covid had also severely impacted on ticket pre-sales. To our great relief, numbers on the night were greater than expected. The choir immediately lifted the audience into a state of euphoria. People were moving with the music and everyone, without exception, was wearing a broad grin on their faces. It was a brilliant evening, raising all our spirits and encouraging us to move into the post-pandemic era with new enthusiasm. A couple in the audience were sufficiently moved and sponsored a new scholarship. The ticket sales raised £700. It was a fantastic evening.

Fundraising drive for NGCF

In the UK, lengthy lockdowns have unfortunately had a severe impact on NGCF’s ability to raise funds, either by recruiting new sponsors or by holding fundraising events. Funding for all our current scholars remains secure, thanks to the continued generosity of our regular sponsors, and this money is ring-fenced so that, whatever happens, no student will be forced to abandon their education before it is completed. We are committed to supporting all our students throughout their secondary and higher education. However, a consequence of the pandemic is that, for the second year running, NGCF has been unable to offer any new scholarships. This is not how we wish things to be, so we have set ourselves a target of raising an additional £15,000 each year, in order to be able to support three new students each year at each of the two schools. In order to reach out to new potential sponsors the trustees have been working on an e-brochure which sets out the mission and work of the charity. We hope this will enable us to present our work to sponsors with greater clarity and bring in more pledges of support.

Back to school at last

After an unprecedented 18 months of severe disruption to education and many other aspects of daily life, NGCF scholars and their classmates are finally getting back to some sort of normality in their school life. Covid lockdowns and political protests have both played a part in disrupting and delaying both teaching and exams. However, we can now report that in the schools we support, end-of-year exams, postponed from the summer, took place in mid-September, immediately followed by entrance exams and the start of the new school year.  NGCF students have also resumed their studies at university and polytechnic. Because of all the disruption it will be another two years before we congratulate our first NGCF graduates, but the students are all glad to be back studying again.

Lockdown in Nigeria

Like most of the rest of the world, Nigeria has been affected by the coronavirus pandemic. Lockdown measures began to be imposed on the different states of the country from the end of March. The two schools supported by NGCF were closed indefinitely on 27 March. Local circumstances and a lack of technology mean that the teachers have mostly been out of contact with their students and do not know how they are faring. Some state education departments have been providing lessons over the radio. Although lockdown measures have started to ease in some parts of the country, including a limited reopening of churches, schools have not yet been given permission to reopen. Please pray for the schools, the teachers and the children.

Lockdown in Reading

Throughout the lockdown in the UK the NGCF trustees have continued to meet via phone and videoconference. The charity’s AGM was conducted in this way on 18 March. The trustees approved the accounts and annual report for the year ending 30 September 2019. One unfortunate result of the lockdown for NGCF was the cancellation of this year’s concert by the Reading Community Gospel Choir, which was due to be given in May. The good news is the Choir has agreed to reschedule the concert for May 2021 by which time, God willing, we will be free to gather again to hear great music, to sing together and to celebrate God’s mercy.

New scholars start and older scholars progress

For the academic year 2019-20 NGCF is sponsoring six new scholars, three at each school, starting in the first year (JSS1). All are from poor families and would not be at school at all without the support of NGCF. Meanwhile, all three of last year’s graduates have secured higher education places: one at university (sociology)  and two at polytechnic (science and laboratory technology; mass communications). We congratulate them on their achievement. This year the first two NGCF scholars will graduate from the girls’ school. They are just about to begin the process of applying to university and polytechnic. We wish them every success.

A new building for the girls’ school

Since 2012 the girls’ school has been housed in a temporary building in the church compound. However, it is now to have its own permanent site. Father Augustine, who manages the school for the diocese, has been recruiting sponsors for a new building, which is gradually taking shape. A special ceremony was held on 10 August to inaugurate the building, thanks the sponsors and drum up further support to get the building finished.

Woodley Inner Wheel raises funds for NGCF

In December, the ladies of Woodley Inner Wheel organized a splendid medieval banquet in aid of NGCF. Guests dressed as knights and ladies, jesters and shabby peasants and ate off gold and silver platters. They pitted their wits against each other in a historical quiz and then gamely turned their hands (and feet) to some medieval dancing, under expert tuition. A rollicking time was had by all and over £1,300 raised for NGCF. With heartfelt thanks to the Woodley Inner Wheel for their generous support.

Gospel Choir sings again for charity

Reading Community Gospel Choir, longtime supporters of NGCF, gave their sixth concert in aid of the charity. As ever, it was a joyous and uplifting evening. The choir began with ‘Total Praise’ and ‘Jesus promised to take care of me’. The audience got involved with ‘This Little Light of Mine’ and there was dancing in the aisles with ‘Love lifted me’. Following the interval, soprano soloist (and Our Lady of Peace parishioner) Luisa Donatella ravished the audience with Lloyd Webber’s ‘Pie Jesu’, Puccini’s ‘Il mio babbino caro’ and finished with some vocal pyrotechnics from The Phantom of the Opera. The choir then returned with a very powerful a cappella version of ‘Call me’. We had Gospel favourites ‘Stand By Me’ and ‘Oh Happy Day’ but they saved the best for the very end. As an encore, they sang ‘Anthem of Praise’, a beautiful Gospel setting of Psalm 150. With the ticket and cake sales, the concert raised over £1,900, bringing to nearly £12,000 the total raised by the choir for NGCF over the years, enough to educate five Nigerian students for ten years at school and university. Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.

NGCF scholars start at university and polytechnic

Last year the first six NGCF scholars graduated from school and proceeded to apply for places at university and polytechnic. It proved to be very challenging for them in a fiercely competitive environment, where university applicants outnumber the available places by five to one. All six scholars did well in their school-leaving and university entrance exams and they have been well supported by their school and church. None was successful in the first round of university admissions but ultimately four of them have secured places in higher education and have begun their courses, on which they are to be congratulated. One is at university studying microbiology and the other three are all at polytechnic, studying nursing, agricultural technology and laboratory technology. We continue to pray for the other two scholars, who have not yet secured places.

Trinity Church raises funds for NGCF

In December, Trinity Church, Lower Earley, devoted one of their Open Saturdays for charity to NGCF. Delicious cakes and refreshments were on sale. NGCF presented a slide show of its charity work and trustees were on hand to answer any questions. £232.11 was raised, which has been generously matched by Trinity Church, to bring a total of £464.22 – enough for nearly two years of education for one of our scholars. Many thanks to Trinity and all their volunteers for this generous support.

Seven new NGCF scholars start secondary school

In September this year, the NGCF trustees agreed to award scholarships to four children starting in JSS1 (equivalent of year seven) at the co-educational school in Nigeria where we sponsor children. Levi, Francis, Peace and Sunday all scored 100% in the maths paper of the entrance exam, and did very well in the English and general papers as well. They are all from very poor families and would not be able to continue in education without a scholarship from NGCF. The entrance exams for the girls’ school were delayed this year owing to regional government bureaucracy but they have now taken place and the trustees have decided to award scholarships to three girls entering JSS1. Many thanks to all the sponsors who have come forward this year to enable us to offer these scholarships. We ask for your continued prayers and support for these children and their families.

Gospel Choir concert raises funds for NGCF

On 23 April the Reading Community Gospel Choir once again gave an evening of soul-stirring gospel music in aid of NGCF. Starting with a powerful rendition of ‘Down by the Riverside’ and ending with the whole audience joining in ‘When the Saints Go Marching in’, it was a thoroughly enjoyable and spiritually uplifting evening. The support act of Rick, Steve, Doug and Katie from the Our Lady of Peace 11 o’clock music group also gave much delight. Our heartfelt thanks go to all the singers and musicians and to everyone who supported the concert, raising a splendid total of over £1,700 for NGCF. Also, as a result of the evening and the presentation given by Ben Krauze, chair of the trustees, on the work of NGCF and the stories of some of our scholars, three new sponsors have come forward. NGCF is therefore delighted to be able to offer scholarships to six more children from September 2016 – look out for more news on these soon.

Girls queuing up for school places

In a recent conversation, the principal of the girls’ school said to Benedict Krauze, chair of the trustees, ‘You don’t know what ripples you have created!’ Over forty mothers have approached her to ask about getting their daughters places at the school. Unfortunately, NGCF does not currently have the funds to offer forty scholarships a year, but with God’s help and the support of a growing number of donors, we hope to gradually increase the sponsorship we can offer and to start supporting schools in other countries as well.

NGCF becomes a UK registered charity

On 22 September NGCF received notification from the Charity Commission that its application to become a UK registered charity had been accepted, and that it had been entered onto the Register of Charities with the Registered Charity Number 1163690. Thanks are due especially to John O’Neill, Secretary and Paul McCarron, Treasurer, for ensuring that all NGCF’s policies and procedures meet the high standards required by the Charity Commission. We feel that this registration has in a small way validated the aims of NGCF and energized us to work harder. Please support and pray for us so that we might be able to share some of the benefits we take for granted with some of the most disadvantaged young people.
